Stephen > This is a ruby throated hummingbird. It was perched in a willow tree in which the hummingbirds love to spend time for some reason. I caught this one though in between branches. Midlothian, Texas, September 2007.
Stephen > I did something a bit different with this image. I had been using for almost all of my flight shots, a very high shutter speed and large lens aperture. With this one, my aperture was still pretty large, but not as much, and I slowed the shutter speed down to I think 1/500. In this way, the wings really just became the blur you see. I like the effect. It's a nice contrast to the other images where I have tried to stop the wings in motion. This particular one was busy fighting for its place in the sacred twisted willow. Stephen > This is one of the carolina chickadees that frequent my area often, but as usual it did not want to get out in the open so I had to deal with the branches. I do like the eye contact though.
