Stephen > Tricolored Heron ready to strike. This image was captured at the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, South Padre Island, Texas, June 2007.
Stephen > This Bewick's Wren was flitting around this hackberry tree in my yard and allowed me this rather close approach before flying off to another tree. My DOF here is a bit shallow, but I still like the photo. Midlothian, Texas. March 2008.
Stephen > This is a juvenile male ruby throated hummingbird. Actually, I know it is a ruby throated hummingbird, but I am not completely sure it is a juvenile. What leads to me to think that it is a juvenile is the lack of a developed gorget, throat area, that adult males have. He was perched in a hackberry tree. Midlothian, Texas, September 2007.
Stephen > This painted bunting had just finished enjoying some nice seeds from some freshly mowed grass. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008
Stephen > This is one of the carolina chickadees that frequent my area often, but as usual it did not want to get out in the open so I had to deal with the branches. I do like the eye contact though.
Stephen > This fine whooping crane gave me a nice pose so I took the shot under partly cloudy skies at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, near Rockport, Texas. The cloudy skies again brought out the yellow the eyes in this whooping crane. November 20, 2007.
Stephen > This is was one of the juvenile whooping cranes we saw near its parents at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, November 20, 2007, near Rockport, Texas. The red area on its bill is actually a wildflower I believe that stuck to the bill while it was foraging. This was one of the few shots I was actually able to make with my camera. It's amazing how much brown is on these juveniles considering how white their plumage is as adults.
Stephen > It is always nice when you know that your children are actually paying attention to you. I have been watching these Mississippi Kites since they arrived at the end of the April. My kids have heard me talking about them and I have showed them my pictures of them as well. Today, as my son and I were driving through the area where the kites nest, one flew right in front of our vehicle. My son shouted, "Look Dad! A Mississippi Kite!" What do you know? He actually listens to me. This picture is one from the series after I quickly pulled off to the side of the road and began snapping pictures. Midlothian, Texas, May 2008.
