Stephen > While traveling to Brownsville from South Padre Island, my wife noticed this Harris's Hawk just off the side of the road perched on top of some scrub brush. I took this picture from the passenger side window. I think this is a male because I noticed a much bigger Harris's Hawk on top of a yucca plant about 50 yards away. Brownsville, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > I observed this Harris's Hawk about 3-4 miles from the entrance to Laguna Atascosa NWR near Laguna Vista, Texas. Once again, the high perch allowed this one to peer onto a large expanse of scrub brush looking for prey. June 2007.
Stephen > This Harris's Hawk actually was not what I was wanting to photograph. I was trying to photograph a yellow-billed cuckoo, but it became quite startled. When I looked up, I saw the Harris's Hawk making a low pass over the scrub brush of Laguna Atascosa NWR. I quickly shot this picture. It's not the greatest, but I like it that I caught the wings up and that the hawk was looking my way.
Stephen > Harris's Hawk on utility line photographed on HW 100 just north of Port Isabel in the small town of Laguna Vista, TX. This is a typical perch for these suburban Harris's Hawks. The high perches allow them to oversee a large area of native scrub brush which undoubtedly holds many a lizard and rabbit on which they feed. June 2007.
