Stephen > A charismatic green jay checking our the surroundings at this feeding and watering area at the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, TX, June 2009
Stephen > The green jays were active at the Javelina Ranch but they were not present in large numbers. They would usually squawk at each other in the trees and then fly down to the water feature at the ranch's Windmill Blind. This one gave me a nice back view. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > The day I took this picture it was near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but for a while the sun went behind some clouds coming off the coast and it made this area surprisingly dark. I was about to get my flash out, but instead opted for higher ISO settings and I stepped up enlarging the aperture. Even so, I brightened the image in Photoshop just a bit. I do like the perch that this green jay gave me so I am glad it all worked out even with bad light. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > The green jays were not quite as abundant as I am used to seeing them when I was last down in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, but they were certainly there. They are not quiet birds. This one came in to check out the action at this feeding area on the Javelina Ranch. If you look carefully you can see that a curve billed thrasher worked its way into the background. I did not know this at the time. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Good to the last drop... Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > I like the slight turn of the head in this image. Several times the green jays would perch and slightly turn their heads as if they were laying their heads down on a pillow while investigating the activity at the feeding station. Fennessey Ranch, Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Here is another green jay waiting on a perch near the feeders. The seed and nuts were very popular on this cold, cloudy day that I visited the Fennessey Ranch. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Here is a green jay giving an inquisitive look at the other birds at a small feeder on the Fennessey Ranch in between Bayside and Refugio, Texas. December 2008
Stephen > This green jay seems to be giving me a curious look as if asking itself who would be outside in the cold on a cloudy, cold day taking photographs of birds. The answer would be me. In all honesty, all this green jay cared about was kicking the cardinals out of the feeder tray. :-) Fennessey Ranch, near Bayside, Texas, December 2008
