Stephen > The chipping sparrows were quite active and numerous when I visited the Fennessey Ranch. I caught this one perching on a branch before jumping back down onto the ground. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > I like the slight turn of the head in this image. Several times the green jays would perch and slightly turn their heads as if they were laying their heads down on a pillow while investigating the activity at the feeding station. Fennessey Ranch, Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > The common grackles that I observed flying large flocks at Fennessey Ranch were much prettier in my opinion than their suburban cousins to whom I am more familiar. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Here is another green jay waiting on a perch near the feeders. The seed and nuts were very popular on this cold, cloudy day that I visited the Fennessey Ranch. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008

Stephen > In this photo, one can see the irrigation canal into which the vermilion flycatcher was diving to grab its prey. I was lucky in that it decided to perch a bit on this small, short stick so I was able to include the canal. Fennessey Ranch near Bayside, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > It was a dreary day, but the sighting of this vermilion flycatcher sure brightened my day! Fennessey Ranch near Bayside, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > When one thinks of grackles, one usually thinks of those urban dwellers that congregate in trees in parking lots and the like. In general, people either think they are pests or pay no attention to them because they are so common. However, if you find them in a more natural environment, they can be quite beautiful. I guess this one can be a considered a hillbilly cousin as I found this one along with its flock deep in the Fennessey Ranch. Near Bayside, Texas, December 2008
