Wrens, Waxwings, Gnatcatchers and Thrushes : A collection of wrens, thrushes and waxwings. These are some very colorful and active birds. Like many other birds, their songs are especially nice. I am particularly fond of the wrens' songs.

Mockingbirds and Thrashers : A collection of thrashers and mockingbirds that I have photographed. The northern mockingbird is very common in my area, Texas, and it is the state bird. The different species of thrashers are around but more prevalent it seems toward southern parts of Texas.

Turtles and tortoises : This is collection of images of the varied turtles and tortoises that I have seen. I never realized the variety of sea turtles that the Gulf of Mexico has. Many thanks go to the good people at Sea Turtle, Inc on South Padre Island, Texas. They continue to educate people about the plight of sea turtles that frequent the waters of the United States and beyond.

Herons and Egrets : I really like herons and egrets. They are very graceful and have some of the prettiest feathers. These pictures were taken in different places. If you click the Map This button you will see, by way of Google Maps, exactly where the photo was taken. I have mapped most, but not all photos.

Blackbirds, jays, crows and meadowlarks : The jays are probably my favorite from this family along with the meadowlarks but they are no where near as numerous and they are also camera shy, at least the ones in my area. The scrub jays seem much less camera shy than the blue jays. All jays are aggressive, which puts off some people, but I think they are very photogenic. Obviously, the grackles are extremely abundant, both the great tailed and common variety. The red winged blackbird, which comes in high numbers in many parts of the United States, while present, does not appear in large numbers in my area of North Texas.

Game Birds and Doves : This is a gallery featuring mostly what one would call game birds. I have quite a few doves in this gallery. Doves tend to be overlooked as they are so common and many times frustrate people as they overwhelm feeders, other birds and are quite messy especially in the city parks. However, if you find them in a more natural environment they are actually quite photogenic.

Cardinals, Pyrrhuloxias, Buntings, Grosbeaks, Dickcissels and Tanagers : Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. The cousin of the cardinal, the pyrrhuloxia, is equally as colorful and of course the buntings and grosbeaks look like they had paint spilled on them. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Cuckoos : Various images of different cuckoos that I have photographed. These tend to be very shy birds so any time I can photograph any type of cuckoo I feel fortunate. This family is also quite strange. It ranges from the relatively normal looking yellow billed cuckoos to the absolutely weird looking anis. I am going to try to overlook that at times they are parasitic brooders like cowbirds.

Parakeets and Parrots : The monk parakeet is not native to the United States. However, monk parakeets that have escaped from its owners or were simply released have slowly adapted to life here and have increased quite substantially in certain areas as a feral population. The Green Parakeets from Brownsville may have started as escapees but they have established themselves well in the area and attracted others up from Mexico I am sure. They are native from there as are the Red Crowned Parrots that I photographed in their palm tree cavity home. I have also included some captive parrots from my local zoo or bird shows that I have attended in this gallery.

Rails, Grebes, Cranes and Coots : These are some images of whooping cranes photographed on the Intracoastal Highway on the outer banks of the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The whooping cranes' images were captured from the deck of the "Jack Flash," a boat I chartered through Aransas Bay Birding Charters. It was a great experience as Kevin Sims, the owner/operator, was able to get me very close, relatively speaking, to the whooping cranes. The handsome whooping cranes spend their winters at Aransas NWR after flying some 2,500 miles from northern Canada. You will also find the close cousin of the whooping crane, the much more numerous Sandhill Cranes that also spend their winters throughout south Texas. Other birds in this family are the rails, grebes and coots.

Chickadees and Titmice : Chickadees are very difficult little songbirds to photograph. They move very quickly and are usually only in the open for a few seconds. I have seen some beautiful pictures of chickadees perched nicely but for the life of me, I cannot find one doing that for me so I have to take the shot when I get it. Hopefully I can add some titmice soon to the gallery. I have seen them but I have never been able to get a good photograph.
